Last Friday it was not as cold as it has been so I decided to brave the less cold weather and actually leave our house. But where to go? We have no Chucky Cheese, no Build-a-Bear (though I'm not sure that would be fun for an 18 month old), no mall with a play area, no sister close by with a huge basement and lots of toys (it would really help me out if you moved here, Janet), and no indoor park (do those exist?). So I took a tip from Parenting magazine on things to do with stir-crazy kids and took Evan to our local free "Zoo".

Yup, your local Petsmart has fish, birds, cats from the local shelter, turtles and geckos. Evan was so excited to be OUT and especially to see some animals that I never could get a shot of his face. I saw a few other parents who were obviously not shopping but getting their stir crazy kids out, ha! But I believe Evan's favorite part of the whole experience was seeing the dogs of customers bringing them in for some grooming.
Little does he know that since his mom isn't a great fan of dogs (as pets for me) and dad really dislikes cats (to put it mildly) this will probably be the closest he gets to having one. I like Tristan's idea: send your kids to your neighbors house who own pets to play with and you'll never have to buy dog food or clean up "dog rice" like poor Claudia. Kudos to Claudia for keeping the dog.

After conversing with Claudia about the tapeworm incident, I broke the bad news to my kids: We will NEVER, EVER get a dog. I felt compelled to explain myself and I regret to report the the words 'shit' and 'worms' were used more than once. There will also be no gerbils, hamsters, hermit crabs, fish or any pet belonging to the reptile family. And when Misha finally dies, there will be no more vomiting cats either. I am such a mean mom!
I think we should all call it the 'faux zoo'. It sounds so upscale it almost seems like it is superior to the real thing :). Looks like lots of fun.
We love the faux zoo! And who said I was keeping the dog? Really, this is more than I can take! Leave the varmints at the store where they belong!
Tristan: I as well broke the news to Evan but unfortunately I think I'll have to be repeating it for the next 4 years. And right now I am with you - no live things in our house that aren't human family or plants!
Corbie: I like that better: "faux" zoo! And it is superior - its free and INSIDE! ha!
Claudia: Poor dog, he gets sick and no one loves him anymore... Todd said on his mission in Brazil Elders got worms all the time and they were still loved.
And there are varmints at Petsmart? I didn't see those... :>
Great idea. My kids have been stir crazy too. You should come to my house for a playdate sometime. We have a basement full of toys.
oh yeah and that basement full of toys is practically forgotten unless friends come over to play.
Michelle: Sounds like fun! We'll plan a playdate. :>
That is definitely the way to do it! We took in the most beautiful black tuxedo stray cat about a year ago. We loved her so much. A little too much actually. Isaac was 4 at the time and couldn't leave her alone. She was scared while I was vacuuming and he tried to hold her and she scarred him for life on his upper arm. We gave her up before she could get his face. Tape worms and fleas were also no fun!
