My vacuum sucks

Help!!!!! We've finally decided to break down and buy a new vacuum and there are TOO many options!!! Really, anything is an upgrade from the 'black, barely-sucking, so loud we used protective ear wear, we'd be better of sweeping' vacuum. But I did not realize there was a land of vacuums so vast that I would get sucked in and almost lose my mind trying to find the "perfect" vacuum for us. To top it all off, EVERY vacuum has good and bad reviews. A single vacuum could be simultaneously heavy and light, powerful and weak, easily maneuvered and difficult to move, great working attachments and cheap pieces of crap attachments - I could go on and on but you get the idea.

Our requirements are that it is not too heavy and bulky, cleans hardwood as well as carpet, has a hose attached, does not require protective ear wear, and roughly $200 or less (we'd go more if it was a great deal or great vacuum). So please, please, PLEASE if you have any suggestions I'm all ears - or eyes, rather. Mocking comments accepted as well.

Use the coupon you get in the mail for 10% off at Linens and Things and buy a Dyson. The one that rotates on a ball would be my choice for maneuverability. Really, I've given this a lot of thought. If you want washer and dryer recommendations, I can make those as well :)

SO JEALOUS, BTW.

When I lived in Utah, I secretly collected vacuums (I had about 5 or 6 working vacuums at a time.) There was a time I vacuumed 5+ times a day...then I realized I had an obsessive-compulsive vacuuming problem, so I moved and gave away all but 2 of my vacuums.

We always liked Hoovers best (in the cheap-pricing category) but I would've loved to buy a Dyson--just too out of price range for me back then. Most cheaper vacuums only "suck" well for the first 6-12 months because the fans (fan blades) get chipped/broken by vacumming up hard(er) material things like rocks/pebbles, rice, screws, beads, etc.
I still have the last vacuum that I bought in Utah, and it still works very nicely. The sucked-up dirt and junk doesn't pass through the fan, so that's why it's lasting longer than normal. It's a Dirt Devil Jaguar, and I paid about $70 for it.

Tristan: Ya know, I've been checking out the Dyson's and they seem great but I'm not sure if it's worth the money for us right now but they do LOOK cool! My sister-in-law has one and she says it gets every stray pet hair in their house.

And believe me - I'd love to take up your washer and dryer recommendations. I love the new front loaders that take a fraction of the water! Heavy sigh...maybe next house.

Whitni: Actually, I think I remember you saying something about vacuums and an obsession to vacuum. But I did not realize you had FIVE vacuums!!! That's a crack up! I actually love vacuum lines but reality dictates they don't last long.

We bought a vacuum - I went to Sam's club and called Todd to check them out on line and then picked the Hoover for $168. 3 year warrenty, pretty blue color and a few nifty tools. Glad to hear Hoovers have been good to you.

Buy a Dyson. Ask your mom-in-law. I love mine and I bet she loves hers

I have a dyson. I love the dyson. I also own a dirt devil, a roomba, a bissell steam cleaner, and a broom (or three).

The dyson is great. The rest are trash (even the $300+ roomba). Here's the catch - even with the 20% off bed bath and beyond coupon, it's expensive - and it's heavy, I think it weighs more than 30 pounds. That said, it is designed to pull itself along, so as long as you don't have to go up and down stairs, it's not that bad. I have to carry mine up 16 stairs, but I still love it. If you don't have a shedding pet, I don't know if it would be worth it, but if you do, this vacuum is amazing. Beware of the rotating ball because of the weight. I have the one that doesn't rotate, and I find that I don't have to fight it.

Oh, and I'm on my third set of front loading washers and dryers (who buys this many washing machines?), so let me know if you want some thoughts on that!

April: I know you, Wendy and Grace all love their Dysons! We looked into that and decided not to spend so much right now - I need some new windows too! :>

Claudia: THREE sets of front loader W/D???? Wow! I'll be sure to check with you and Tristan before we purchase our next set. I always wondered if the roomba was worth the price - thanks for the heads up! See above comment about the Dyson. :>
